New medical director at health department

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency’s Board of Health has approved the selection of Karen Luparello as their next medical director.

Lauren Vogel will be stepping down from the position effective September 30.

Luparello is a board-certified ophthalmologist, specializing in pediatrics and is affiliated with Hillsdale Hospital.

She received her medical degree from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Additionally, she holds a master’s degree in Health Professions Education from Michigan State University.

She will begin her transition to medical director next week, working with Vogel until his retirement.

Vogel has served the agency since 2013.  He was instrumental in helping the agency navigate the COVID 19 pandemic, health officer Rebecca Burns said.

  1. Best wishes to Ms. Luparello in her new position. I notice there is no mention anywhere of any background in community health. Perhaps I should be wishing good luck to the residents of St. Joe, Branch and Hillsdale counties. Hopefully this is not another Rand Paul.
