County unemployment rate down

June’s unemployment rate in St. Joseph County decreased by one-tenth of a percent from May.

The monthly labor-market analysis by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget was released last week. It showed St. Joseph County’s unemployment rate fell from 5.6 percent in May to 5.5 percent in June.

The rate was 10.7 percent a year earlier, as June 2020 marked the third full month impacted by COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Cass County experienced no change in its unemployment rate from May to June. Its rate remained 5 percent.

Branch County’s one-month unemployment rate also was unchanged, remaining at 5.1 percent from May to June.

At 6.8 percent, Calhoun County had the region’s highest unemployment rate in June.

Michigan’s unemployment rate for June was 5.3 percent, up from 5.2 percent in May.
