Constantine house added to National Register of Historic Places

A St. Joseph County property has received a notable designation by the National Park Service.

The parcel and its residence, located in Constantine, have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Known as the Nettleton-Cond House, the property is at 260 S. Washington St.

Nathan Nietering, project coordinator for Lansing-based State Historic Preservation Office, said the label was bestowed earlier this summer by the National Register of Historic Places, a program under the umbrella of the National Park Service.

He explained there is at least one of four criteria to be met in order for a location to be considered worthy of consideration and the Nettleton-Cond House qualified under the category of design/architecture.

Nettleton was the surname of the home’s builder. It was built in 1848. Nietering said the house originally was at a different location, one lot to the south at the corner of Third Street.

Cond, meanwhile, was the name of the owner of the house when it was moved, which Nietering said was in the 1800s.
