Conservation District concludes successful river cleanup program

Officials affiliated with the St. Joseph County Conservation District’s river cleanup program are calling 2021 a success.

The conservation district was able to conduct its full slate of five cleanups during a three-month window that concluded with a makeup event Sept. 11.

Carolyn Grace, conservation district executive director, said between the five events, 54 people participated in 2021. That was down by 25 people a year earlier.

She estimated about 1,000 pounds of debris, including 16 tires, were collected overall this summer.

A schedule featuring dates and locations for the 2022 season will be released by March.
