Sturgis man faces up to 50 years in prison

A Sturgis man involved in a fatal shooting last year could serve up to 50 years in prison following his sentencing Monday by St. Joseph County Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman.

Erik Davis, 36, was sentenced to between 15 and 50 years for the October 2020 shooting death of Doug Smith, 33.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Gary Gabry said Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

The situation started at Davis’ home on North Prospect Street, and involved other people and alcohol, investigators said. What started out as horseplay ended in a physical confrontation. Authorities said Davis eventually went into his home and came back outside with a firearm and shot Smith three times.

Davis agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder with a minimum sentence of 15 years before he is eligible for parole.
