An allegation of financial misconduct leveled at Colon Community Schools Superintendent Penny Brockway will be investigated by Thrun Law Firm of Grand Rapids.
The matter was approved Monday by the district’s board of education during a special meeting. According to the motion, the district will also contact the Michigan Department of Education Title and Grant Funding office as part of the investigation.
District officials are acting on a claim by district resident Deb Davis, who alleged Brockway signed a series of annual contracts over the past three years with Grant Chandler without the board’s consent. Davis said Chandler was tapped to provide professional development to the district’s teachers.
Davis also alleged Chandler lacks the credentials to perform, specifically, the service of “instructional navigator” through his “Every Student Achieves” program.
After Monday’s meeting, which included a 36-minute executive session for attorney-client privilege, Brockway said the investigation will yield facts that support her case and she vowed the truth will be told.
Brockway, 52, is in her fifth year as Colon’s superintendent.
