Larry Brueck was honored this week by Nottawa Township Board members, who praised his work ethic, integrity and commitment to his job as township sexton.
Tuesday was Brueck’s final township board meeting, as he is retiring at the end of the week, just shy of 28 years on the job. Township officials staged a small reception prior to their meeting, as Brueck’s immediate family members joined in for what was supposed to be a surprise celebration.
The 66-year-old Brueck said he was honored and humbled by the attention and fanfare. He said the concept of being retired has yet to sink in. Brueck, who also farms on the side, said digging graves and maintaining the grounds of the township’s five cemeteries kept him busy through the years.
Brueck was named the first recipient of the “William Dobrowolski Memorial Citizenship Award,” which recognizes individuals whose contributions have benefitted the people of Nottawa Township.
The late Dobrowolski served a number of years as Nottawa Township clerk and was involved in the township in numerous ways.
