County commission approves millage-renewal

St. Joseph County commissioners voted Tuesday to allow the county’s Transportation Authority to place a millage-renewal request on the August ballot.

The matter was broached a week earlier, when agency director Allen Balog appeared before county commissioners at their executive committee meeting and appraised the panel on the request.

Balog said the request would be for a four-year renewal of one-third of a mill. It will not increase taxes, he said, noting approval would merely continue the amount currently levied.

He said the agency has a $2.5 million budget and one-third of a mill represents $720,000 of its budget.

The matter will appear before voters Aug. 2.
