Margaret Riggs, 83

M. Margaret Riggs, 83, of Kalamazoo, passed away Oct. 19, 2009 at her Hope Woods residence. Margaret was born Dec. 8, 1925 in Three Rivers the daughter of W. Karl and Gertrude (Hendrickson) Knapp. She worked at the Abstract Office in Centreville 1943-45 and then in the advertising department at Shakespeare company from 1946-52 and 1961-75 and at the SLD Center in the 70’s. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo where she was a Sunday school teacher and was active in other groups at church. Margaret volunteered with the Girl Scouts of America, the Community Access Center and the Ladies Library Association. She lived in the Milwood neighborhood for 55 years. On Dec. 29, 1945 in Three Rivers, she was united in marriage with Kenneth Riggs who preceded her in death in 1992. She was also preceded by two sisters, Kathryn Birkhold and Barbara Luegge Behrends. Surviving are three children, Randy (Julie) Riggs of Vicksburg, Martha Riggs of San Diego, Calif. and Laurie Nichols of Lexington, Ky.; two grandchildren, Drew (Faith) Nichols and Emily (Michael) Stephens; and one sister, Janeth Ream of Ann Arbor. A memorial service to honor her life will take place on Saturday, 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church followed by light refreshments in the parlor of the church.
