Street millage renewal on May ballot

Voters in Sturgis will be asked May 3 to consider a 10-year, 3-mill dedicated street millage renewal.

Voters approved the original request in 2013.

The millage is limited to streets under the city’s jurisdiction and does not include state or county routes, such as U.S. 12 and Centerville Road.

The city’s website at sturgismi.gov has a link on the front page that provides information on street improvements over the last 10 years; the current condition of the city streets; and the potential impact a renewal of the dedicated street millage could have.

If approved, the millage would raise nearly $750,000 in its first year. Projects being planned over the next two years include improving St. Joseph Street from North Centerville Road to Nottawa Street; East Hatch Street from Prospect Street to Lakeview Avenue; North Franks Avenue from the Doyle Center to East Lafayette Street; and Main Street from Clay to George streets.
