Ethel Travis, 83

Ethel Laverne Travis died on April 8, 2022.  She was born in Lexington, Mississippi on July 24, 1938, to the union of Earl and Peoria Travis. She was  proceeded in death by both of her parents, one son, four siblings and our Father in Heaven.

Ethel was the fifth of ten children, growing up on her parents’ farm. She was known to be very active and a playful young lady. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord and personal Savior and was later baptized. She attended West Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Lexington, MS. Where she was an active member throughout her youth.

In 1957, Ethel attended Ambrose Vocational High School. She admired her teachers and understood the importance of her education. Upon graduation, she relocated to Chicago, where she was employed as a Nurses Assistant with Cook County Hospital for several years.

In 1971, she relocated to Three Rivers, where she began her career with the General Telephone Company, Dayco and General Motors Co. until she retired in the early 2000s. She had a strong work ethic and raised her sons to understand the importance of hard, consistent work.

She became a dedicated member of Bethel Baptist Church and later joined New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Tony Bennett.

Ethel was a devoted daughter, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who demonstrated her love for her family. She was a free spirited woman with a kind heart and a bright personality.

Ethel was able to enjoy time with her family. She loved many things like fishing, baseball, sewing, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren, being around people laughing and talking, telling funny jokes, and definitely having a good time with the people she cherished the most. “Her Family.” Needless to say, she really enjoyed life.

She has touched many souls, that will miss her deeply. The love she had and showed for her sons, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and her sisters, words couldn’t even describe it enough. We love you, Ethel!

Ethel loved her family and always wanted what was best for them. On April 8, 2022, Ethel departed this earthly life. She reunited with her beloved parents, Earl and Peoria Travis; one son, Gregory Jones; four siblings, Catherine Green, Clementean Hodges, Doris Patton, and Versa Sims.

Ethel leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Daniel, Vincent and Reginald; five sisters, Earlean Hughes of St. Ann, IL, Synola Okparaji of Chicago, Bobbie Noel of Lexington, MS, Mae Earnest and Tersa Noel of Woodstock, GA; 15 grandchildren, Laurencio, Daniel Jr., Justin, Samantha-Jean, Gabril, Gregory Jr., Tashion, Oscar, Vincent Jr., Persia, Jasmine, Marvin, Napoleon, Reginald Jr., Nathaniel; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom definitely going to miss her dearly.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 15, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hohner Funeral Home, 1004 Arnold St., Three Rivers, and Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 817 Eighth St., Three Rivers. A funeral service will follow at noon at the church, with Pastor Tony Bennett officiating. She will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
