Jane Shively, 80

Our beloved sister Frances “Jane” Rose Shively, age 80, was called home by the Lord on Friday, April 28, 2022 at Three Rivers Health in Comfort Care. She was born the eldest of seven to Joseph Leo and Elizabeth Ann Dobrowolski in Three Rivers, Michigan. She graduated from Immaculate Conception School in 1955 and Three Rivers High School in 1959.

Even though Jane excelled in High School Business courses, she set her sights on a Nursing career since her early girl scout days and graduated from Borgess School of Nursing and Nazareth College in Kalamazoo. Always interested in furthering her Nursing education, she attended Wayne State University in Detroit and Ann Arbor’s University of Michigan. She retired from Nursing in 2003 from Kalamazoo’s Borgess Medical Center Department of Surgery as a surgical supervisor.

At an early age Jane loved music, played the accordion and later learned the piano, and played the church organ. As she cared for her siblings when just a youngster, she would pack them up in a wagon hooked to her bike, sling one or two on the handle bars and fenders and go off to town for some popcorn and a fun day at Scidmore Park. As a young Detroiter she found jobs for her siblings, assisted them with their college and beauty school education, and shared her home with them.

Jane was an extremely dedicated Nurse and a life-long Catholic and read the entire Bible at the age of 9 and enjoyed making rosaries for the missions as a member of the Rosary Confraternity. She was an avid reader and especially loved to read religious books and memorize the Psalms.

Jane was gifted with a strong will, perseverance and determination. Whatever she attempted, she did it well—whether it was caring for her husband’s health or running their household. As a young girl she was afflicted with Rheumatoid Arthritis, but it did not hold her back as she enjoyed sailing on Lake St. Clair, down-hill skiing, tennis, landscape painting, crocheting, knitting, crafts or volunteering. She loved animals and was concerned over the welfare of her cats, Missy and Wendy, as she struggled with her recent health problems. She was courageous, optimistic and determined to get better each day. She was always an inspiration with a cute sense of quiet humor.

No two ways about it, she will forever be missed by her surviving siblings, Barbara (Tim) Davidson, Wes (Carol) Dobrowolski, Mary (Tom) Merchant, Alice and sister-in-law Jody Dobrowolski; her nieces and nephews and their families, Michael (Mondae) Dobrowolski, Scott (Catherine) Dobrowolski, Becky (Ryan) McGill and Matthew Dobrowolski, and is survived by her Uncle Chet Dobrowolski and his family, as well as her Aunt Betty Jane Darish and her family, and her dear friend Judy Gilchrist Mohney.

Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years Wilbur “Bill” Shively, who died March 19, 2022; her parents; two brothers, William and James Dobrowolski; Uncle William Darish, Aunt Stephy Dobrowolski, Uncle Wesley Frank Dobrowolski and Ethel (Bea) Dobrowolski, and Bernice “Penar” Dobrowolski; and cousins Nancy Dobrowolski and Robert Darish.

Jane’s family wishes to thank so much the dedicated Doctors, Nurses and Care Givers at Three Rivers Health, for the care and concern that we received.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place and a private family memorial is planned this summer for Jane and her husband Bill, where they had placed their memorial gravestone in Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Sky Foundation, Inc., for early detection of pancreatic cancer. Envelopes are available at Hohner Funeral Home in care of her arrangements.
