Colon names new superintendent

Colon Community Schools officials have agreed to tender a contract to Rachel Kowalski to serve as superintendent of the 525-student district.

Board president Deb Bordner said the unanimous decision to offer the job to Kowalski was a relief, as the board managed to fill a position vacant since Penny Brockway resigned in January.

Selecting Kowalski became a bit easier after finding out Tuesday the other finalist, Mike Rasmussen, accepted a job as principal at Branch Area Career Center. Rasmussen’s surprise move prompted the board to consider re-opening the superintendent’s position. In the end, however, board members acknowledged the pool of candidates is drying up and finding someone with better credentials or experience than Kowalski could be a challenge.

A native of Lake Orion in Oakland County, the 38-year-old Kowalski said she is planning to make a full-time commitment to the community.

An Oakland University graduate, Kowalski is on track to receive her PhD in December. She most recently served as director of teaching and learning at Clintondale Community Schools in Macomb County.

According to the job posting, the starting salary is $106,000.
