David Elliott Gearring, MD, age 73, of Sturgis, passed away early Thursday morning, May 19, 2022, at his home. He was born August 14, 1948 in East Chicago, Illinois son of the late Denver and Sallie (Elliott) Gearring. Dr. Gearring resided in Sturgis since 1995 coming from St. Joseph, Michigan. His early life was lived in Gary, Indiana where he was a graduate of Gary Roosevelt High School with the class of 1966. He furthered his education at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1970. He was accepted into the University Of Minnesota School Of Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1978.
On June 26, 1971, he married Doris Adams in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Dr. Gearring retired from Sturgis Hospital following 15 years of dedicated service as an Anesthesiologist. He was a member of the First A.M.E. Church in Gary, Indiana. He also held memberships in Kappa Alpha Psi and the Fisk University Alumni Association. Dr. Gearring had a passion for reading and was a strong supporter of the Sturgis District Library. He enjoyed basketball, playing golf, tennis, and chess, and had recently started raising orchids and roses. He loved music, playing the piano, and was learning to play the standup bass.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of nearly 51 years: Doris; two sons: David (Tiffany) Gearring, Jr. of Tacoma, Washington, and William (Kayla) Gearring of Grand Rapids; two grandchildren: Nadia and Jabari; siblings: Katie Pearson of Sun City West, Arizona, Dr. Caroline (Dr. Jonathan) Majak of Alpena, Denver (Patricia) Gearring, Jr. of Gary, Morris Gearring of Chicago, and Gloria (Sandy) Middlebrooks of Boston, brother-in-law: Dr. Michael Adams of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law: Dr. Sondra Bragg of Oklahoma City, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister/aunt: Henrene Averitt, and brother: Paul Gearring.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 26th at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes in Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Dr. David E. Gearring, MD will be held Saturday, June 11th at the Williams Chapel Church of God in Christ, 2201 Tennessee St, in Gary, Indiana. The Pastor Anthony Williams will officiate.
