Phyllis J. Shipe, age 94, of Sturgis, passed away Friday, September 2, 2022 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born February 6, 1928 in LaGrange County, Indiana daughter of the late William and Mabel (Chrystler) Weirich.
Phyllis resided in Wellston for 10 years. Most of her life was spent in Sturgis where she was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1946.
On April 12, 1949 she married Herbert E. Shipe at the Sturgis Church of Christ in Sturgis. He died April 27, 1997.
She had been employed by the Panel Lite Company in Kalamazoo and also worked for 19 years at the Bunting Brass and Bronze Corporation and she was a homemaker.
Phyllis was the last original member of the Sturgis Church of Christ when it was established in 1931. She was also a member of Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW Auxiliary and she was an avid reader.
She is survived by four grandsons: Justin (Sonia) Shipe of Kent, James (Michelle) DeVries of Taylor, Joshua (Candra) Shipe of Vandercook Lake and Frederick Shipe, Jr. of Jackson; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two sons: Herbert W. Shipe and Frederick Lee Shipe, Jr.; two sisters: Dorothy Shutes and Betty Rifenburg and one brother: Robert L. “Knobby” Weirich.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Phyllis J. Shipe will be held at the Sturgis Church of Christ at a later date to be announced. Private burial of the remains will take place at Mount Ever Rest Memorial Park South in Kalamazoo.
