Serious injuries in Cass County crash

A 50-year-old Indiana man was injured in a one-vehicle crash over the weekend in Cass County’s Jefferson Township.

Sheriff Richard Behnke said deputies were called shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday to the area of M-60 and Stone Lake Drive on the south side of Cassopolis.

Investigators said a car driven by Michael Douglas II, a South Bend resident, was heading east on M-60 around 1 a.m. when Douglas lost control and the vehicle ran off the road.

Authorities said Douglas was unable to exit the vehicle because of injuries he had suffered. In, addition, his car was quickly covered by snow and not visible from the roadway.

A passerby in the morning light saw movement near the ditch and went to investigate. The passerby found Douglas still in the vehicle and authorities were then notified.

Douglas was extracted from the vehicle and eventually airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital.
