Albert M. “Roy” Peterson, age 68, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor.
He was born Oct. 17, 1941, in Birmingham, Ala., a son of the late Alden W. and Janet (Chalmers) Peterson.
Roy had resided in Sturgis since 1954, coming from Evanston, Ill., and was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1960.
Nearly all of Roy’s working life was involved in the automobile business. For several years he co-owned and operated the Chicken Coop restaurant in Sturgis.
Roy was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of Quarter Master 3rd class. He was a life member and Past Commander of Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW. He also was a life member of Jack Johnston Chapter #88 DAV, Neuman Wenzel Post #73 American Legion and the Eagles Lodge #1314. Roy was also an active member of the VFW Funeral Honor Guard.
He is survived by three sons, Major Scott A. (Dr. Kim Struble) Peterson of Washington, D.C., Ryan Peterson of Conyers, Ga., and Brenden Peterson of Sturgis; a daughter, Melissa (Nate) Wager of Sturgis; two brothers, Dr. Thomas C. (Rosie) Peterson of Gadsden, Ala., and Alden Lloyd (Norma) Peterson of Grand Rapids; special friend Virginia Penner of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Mr. Larry Wallman will officiate. Full military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
