Plans are again moving forward for the Sturgis splash pad project, delayed by a year due to lack of bids for the project.
The city split the project into two segments — a parking lot and bathroom site, and the splash pad itself, to potentially attract bidders.
Sturgis Planning Commission members last week heard an update on the project and approved a site plan review for the amenity in Thurston Woods Park.
Corey Kandow, senior project manager at Abonmarche, the engineering company spearheading the splash pad development, said the most comments heard by the company about the lack of bids involved technical work between contractors and the splash pad. The parking lot project and the splash pad were too different for one contractor to take on. Additionally, potential bidders said they had sufficient work, a commonly heard reason why some project timelines have had to be adjusted.
City officials said they hope work will begin in the spring.
