A St. Joseph County resident is out $8,000 after falling victim to a scam executed last week.
Sheriff Mark Lillywhite said the victim received a phone call from someone who identified themselves as her grandson. The alleged grandson reported he had been arrested and was in need of money for bail.
The alleged grandson and a pretend lawyer stated they needed $8,000 in cash for the grandson to be released from jail.
After withdrawing the money from the bank, the victim returned home, called a phone number provided by the pretend lawyer and handed the money to a pretend bondsman who showed up shortly after confirming she was home.
The victim’s grandson was contacted and stated he was never arrested and had no involvement in the incident.
