Two killed in crash near White Pigeon

Two Shipshewana women died following a two-vehicle crash last week in White Pigeon Township.

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said deputies were called shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday to Indian Prairie Road, near Kalamazoo Road, in response to a personal-injury incident.

Investigators said an Escalade driven by a 19-year-old Lagrange County man was heading west on Indian Prairie when it attempted to pass a Chevy Cobalt in a no-passing zone. Authorities said the driver of the Escalade possibly misjudged his clearance from the car and his vehicle struck the Cobalt, sending it off the roadway. The Cobalt then struck tree.

A 29-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 27-year-old woman was air-lifted to Bronson Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She eventually died at the hospital.  Names of the victims were not released.

The suspect is charged with several felonies.
