A pit bull owned by a Constantine resident will be euthanized after it bit a woman in the face earlier this year.
The matter was handled Wednesday by St. Joseph County District Court Judge Jeff Middleton.
The defendant, Cassandra McWaters, sobbed as Middleton read the order that the unlicensed dog involved in the April attack be euthanized within a week.
Middleton said Constantine Police Chief Dan Thayer was advised that someone had been bitten in the face in April 2023 at McWaters’ residence.
Josh Robare, assistant prosecuting attorney, said in exchange for dismissing a charge of unlicensed dog against McWaters, the pit bull would be destroyed.
The dog is currently at animal control in Centreville, where it will be euthanized. Middleton ordered that McWaters reimburse animal control for the cost of the procedure.
There may be further, other litigation in this matter regarding civil liability for personal injury damages, but that’s not a part of this case, Middleton said.
