Thurston Woods holds Resident Olympics

Thurston Woods residents had the opportunity to engage in some friendly, Olympic-style competition last week.

Maree Wagner, administrative assistant at the Sturgis-based senior-care facility, said Resident Olympics is a tradition enjoyed by many members of the Thurston Woods family.

Wagner said an opening ceremony Aug. 15 featured a parade of residents through the facility’s hallways. Several decorated their wheelchairs and walkers with red, white and blue streamers and other colorful additions.

Daily activities then followed the subsequent three days. Friday’s game was a modified version of curling, while previous activities included target shooting, bowling, soccer, and wheelchair and walker races.

Residents had the option to participate in as few or many of the events as they wished. She said some people showed up just to encourage others, while others simply enjoyed the stimulation of watching neighbors and friends take part in various activities.
