Out and About – Week of September 11th

This is a full week when it comes to special recognitions. Monday, September 11 is now known as Patriot Day. Twenty-two years ago, on that date, the United States of America was viciously attacked. After that day, more and more Americans started flying the American flag to show the amount of patriotism that exists in our great country. Friday, September 15 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Another reason to fly the colors at our homes. Friday, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown. Mark your calendars and pause to reflect on these special days.

Next Sunday, September 17, is Constitution Day. How many of you are knowledgeable enough to discuss our constitution for more than thirty seconds? The seventeenth is also the first day of the annual St. Joe County Grange Fair. This particular fair has the reputation of being one of the finest in all of southwestern Michigan. Every day has something special happening for every member of the family. I’ll be helping out with the Courtesy Golf Carts at the fair. These carts are available to take you almost anywhere on the fair grounds. Just flag one down and they’ll be happy to take you where you want to go. These rides are absolutely FREE, and the drivers are prohibited from accepting gratuities. If you happen to see me, let me take you Out and About the area.

Whether you are attending the fair or just following your daily routine, here are eight things you don’t need to have with you all the time:

Social Security card. You don’t need this for daily use, and criminals could use it to open lines of credit in your name or sell it to another criminal.
Multiple credit cards and receipts. Choose one credit card and one debit card you wish to use the most. Leave the others at home. Multiple credit cards are a gold mine for criminals.
Checkbook, or even one blank check. The days when you might need one for a purchase are mostly in the past.
Work ID card. If you are not at work, you don’t need to display the ID.
Passport or passport card. If you are in the United States, no one is going to want to see your passport.
List of your passwords. This should be kept under lock and key at home.
Gift card not fully redeemed. Carry this with you when you are planning to use it.
Birth Certificate. This should also be kept locked up at home.

We haven’t heard much lately about the Bermuda Triangle. You might be interested in knowing that within Lake Michigan there is a “triangle” with a similar reputation to the Bermuda Triangle. There have been a large amount of strange disappearances occurring over this Great Lake. There have also been several UFO sightings.

It’s been reported that this summer has been the hottest summer ever recorded. Extreme temperatures have been the topic of many evening newscasts. Perhaps this winter will not be as severe when it comes to low temperatures. It will be interesting to see what next summer brings us.

See you Out and About!
