Clean-up continues at broken petroleum line

Emergency crews remain on the site of a broken petroleum line in Branch County’s Girard Township.

The incident occurred Tuesday in an area on Bell Road. It involves a 10-inch BP petroleum line. Company officials said the road will be closed at least until Oct. 27.

Crews are continuing to remove contamination from the 8,400 gallons of gasoline that leaked into the soil, Branch County Administrator Bud Norman said.

Removal of materials from the farm field continued Thursday, with the supervision transferring from the Environmental Protection Agency to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Contaminated soil will go to Heritage Thermal Treatment Services in East Liverpool, Ohio, for burning.

The leak area is approximately 30-feet-by-50-feet.
