Colon crash – Minor injuries

Two cars ended up in the mill race following an incident last week in downtown Colon.

St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Capt. T.J. Baker said the county’s dive/rescue team was summoned after local authorities responded to the incident, which occurred around 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

According to authorities, the driver of a car was pulling out of an on-street parking space and into a lane of traffic. The driver, however, pulled into the path of a car, causing a collision that resulted in both vehicles rolling over a chain-link protective fence, falling approximately 15 feet into the water on the south side of the roadway.

Passers-by helped both drivers out of their vehicles, which were in water estimated to be five feet deep, Baker said.

The drivers were a 70-year-old Colon woman and a 76-year-old woman from Sherwood. Authorities said the victims suffered minor injuries.
