A proposed temporary residence for former military members is gaining momentum, as St. Joseph County officials discussed the concept in detail earlier this week.
During their executive committee meeting Tuesday, county commission members heard a report from Veteran’s Affairs Director Stoney Summey. The proposal, which centers on the purchase of a residence at 308 S. Main St. in Three Rivers, was first discussed in December.
Summey returned with more information this week and received a cautious but positive reaction from commissioners and county administrator Teresa Doehring.
Doehring recommended securing a reputable general contractor to conduct an inspection of the house. She also suggested the county consider authorizing a professional review of the property’s legal documents.
The structure once was part of Immaculate Conception Catholic School and later served as Twin County Probation Center. The current asking price is $179,900, but Summey said the owner is willing to sell for $134,900, considering the benevolent intent, Summey said.
The building has enough space for seven bedrooms, though one would need to be used as an office, leaving room to accommodate six veterans in need of housing.
Summey has said federal grants through Supportive Services for Veteran Families would cover rent for occupants. Rent would be $700 per month per resident and maximum length of stay would be nine months per person.
