Martin Troyer, 63

Martin James Troyer, age 63, of Sturgis, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2024 in LaGrange County due to injuries sustained in an automobile pedestrian accident on the Indiana Toll Road. At the time of the accident, Martin was assisting on a wrecker call.

He was born March 29, 1960 in Elkhart, son of the late Paul James “Jim” and Nancy (Johnson) Troyer.

Martin was a lifelong Sturgis resident and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1978.

On May 4, 2001 he married Teri Sue Husband in Kalamazoo.

Martin retired in 2019 from the LaGrange County Highway Department following 10 years of dedicated employment. Prior to joining the Highway Department, he began his working life at the age of 15 with the Dave Sturgis family and Prairie Edge Farms where he worked for 25 years. Following his retirement and not being one to just sit around, he helped his good friend, Tim Grate with Grates Wrecker Service in LaGrange.

He enjoyed following the stock market and delving into finance and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle until carpal tunnel and back issues forced him to stop. Martin truly loved farming and was happiest when he was on a tractor or operating heavy equipment. Those who knew Martin will forever remember his desire to help others.

He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife: Teri Sue; step-sons: Jacob (Stephanie) Doubblestein of West Melbourne, Florida and Andrew (Gwen) Doubblestein of Union; grandchildren: Mia, Isaac, Bo and Ian; mother: Nancy Troyer of Sturgis; sister: Karen (Jay) VanVlerah of Loveland, Colorado; brothers: Marc Troyer of Goshen, Indiana and Jeffery (Lisa) Troyer of Clover, South Carolina; niece and nephews: Anna Troyer, Samuel Troyer, Joshua (Sarah) VanVlerah and Tyler VanVlerah; great nephew: Jack VanVlerah.
