Sturgis man killed in crash

Speed and alcohol were cited as potential factors in a fatal, two-car crash in White Pigeon Township over the weekend, according to investigators.

Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said deputies were called around 2 a.m. Saturday to an area of Fawn River Road, near Mill Pond Road, in reference to a head-on crash.

Upon arrival, deputies were made aware of a 26-year-old Sturgis man pinned in his vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was identified as Clayton Whitcomb.

The other driver, a 28-year-old man from LaGrange, Dylan Schlabach, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Parkview Lagrange Hospital.

A preliminary investigation shows that Whitcomb was driving eastbound on Fawn River Road and his vehicle crossed the centerline, into the path of the Schlabach’s vehicle.

It appears seatbelts were not worn, authorities said.
