Barn losses estimated at $2.8 million

Centreville Fire Chief Dave Miracle has determined wind was a factor in the cause of a fire last weekend at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds.

Miracle said he returned to the fairgrounds Monday to further investigate the situation. He determined the source of the blaze centered on a powerline coming from a nearby pole to the weather head on Building 42.

Miracle said the powerline shorted out. As a result, arching caused the roof to catch fire. Due to high-wind conditions, the fire spread quickly across the tar-coated roof, Miracle said.

Considering 26 boats were inside the barn for winter storage were a total loss, Miracle estimates loss value at $2.8 million, including the building and contents.

Miracle said Barns 41 and 43 both have minor damage due to the heat.
