High water levels pose dangers to boaters

With the recent rain creating high water levels, St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman is asking boaters to refrain from causing wakes until water levels recede.

Bingaman said many area lakes and streams are at high levels following the excessive amount of rainfall over the past two weeks. High lake levels make boating more hazardous, and boaters and anglers should prepare for these conditions by using extra caution, Bingaman said.

High water levels have the potential to cause shoreline damage, docks and boats to come unattached, and dangerous floating obstacles.

In addition, Bingaman said boaters should use caution when launching because high water can make ramps tricky.

When boating near the shore or in coves, drivers should go slow to avoid underwater obstacles such as signposts, trees, stumps and other obstructions that are normally on dry ground.
