Joan Greenway, 87

Joan Clara (Schmitt) Greenway, born on June 30, 1937, in Mendon, the daughter to Clair and Doris (Berger) Schmitt, passed away peacefully on August 7 2024 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. She married James Greenway on May 4, 1974 and became a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area.  Joan spent her life devoted to her family, her work, and her community.

Joan was a proud graduate of Mendon High School, where she celebrated her achievements as a member of the graduating Class of 1955 and continued to be actively involved with planning class functions beyond her graduation.  She went on to have a successful career as a bookkeeper, contributing her talents to several organizations, including the Kalamazoo Gazette, Manatron, and Parker Hannifin. Beyond her professional endeavors, she dedicated her time to serving her community, notably as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, where her compassion and commitment left a lasting impact.

A devout member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Otsego, Joan found strength and solace in her faith. She cherished the relationships she built within her church community, as well as her family, which was her greatest joy.

In her spare time, Joan enjoyed researching family genealogy, allowing her to connect with her roots and share stories that enriched her family’s history.

Joan is survived by her son, Clair (Michelle) Greenway; her granddaughter, Ryanne (Nathan) Simmons; and her grandson, Nathan Greenway; her sister-in-law, Sue Schmitt; her nephews, Scott (Mary) Schmitt, Brian (Tonya) Schmitt and Craig Schmitt and her nieces, Michelle (John) Watson and Shayne (Don) Uphold.
