County commission considers COA request for new van

St. Joseph County commissioners heard a request for the purchase of a new cargo van for St. Joseph County Commission on Aging.

During their executive committee meeting Tuesday, St. Joseph County Finance Director Angie Steinman said the agency’s 2007 cargo van was totaled in a crash. Steinman said the COA employee driving the van was not hurt nor were they at fault.

Insurance is reimbursing the county $7,000, which will go toward the purchase of a replacement van. Steinman said COA officials have not yet identified a replacement vehicle, but the process will likely begin in earnest after commissioners approve the request at their monthly board meeting Tuesday next week.

The replacement will cost no more than $40,000, including the $7,000 insurance reimbursement.

The van is used in a variety of capacities, including hauling maintenance materials and supplies, and as a mode of transportation between COA facilities in Three Rivers and Sturgis.
