Solar field project gets approval

A solar field able to fully power about 35,000 houses is in the planning stages but moving forward in Cass County’s Marcellus Township.

According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, Ranger Power’s Steelhead Solar project recently received unanimous approval for a conditional-use permit from both the Marcellus Township Planning Commission and Township Board of Trustees, the company said.

The development is taking place on a 2,000-acre parcel in the northeast quadrant of the township. Project officials said panels will cover about three-quarters of the property.

Township officials claim the $250 million project is expected to generate millions of dollars in tax revenue for local governments, according to the company.
