Driver in fatal crash sentenced

A Cass County man will serve up to 15 years in prison after a passenger in a car he drove died in a 2023 crash.

Jones resident Ke-Shawn Gene Buck, 27, was sentenced last week in Cass County Circuit Court. He had previously pleaded guilty to reckless driving causing death.

Cass County Circuit Court Judge Mark Herman sentenced Buck to between two and 15 years in prison.

The incident occurred in August 2023, when Buck was speeding on Born Street in Newberg Township. Authorities said his vehicle passed a truck and, at a speed of 96 miles per hour, went through a stop sign before losing control of his car and crashing.

His passenger, Kierstin Johnson, died at the scene. Buck, meanwhile, received major injuries, leaving him a quadriplegic and requiring 24-hour care.
