Sturgis municipal officials are debating whether to continue offering curbside recycling.
During last week’s city commission meeting, city manager Andrew Kuk said the current contract with Elkhart-based Borden Waste Management Services expires at the end of the year.
Kuk said the city is in a position to weigh three options: absorb an anticipated price increase and continue recycling service as currently in place; continue to collect residential fees and provide recycling in a different manner – possibly drop-off options; or discontinue recycling altogether.
A vote on the next step was not taken during the meeting, though an informal consensus of council members suggested removing curbside recycling until the city’s next fiscal year.
Kuk proposed the city gauges feedback from residents and revisit the matter in the future.
Sturgis has been offering curbside recycling since 2008. The service currently costs $24 annually per residence.
