Holton Cowan, Jr., 78

Holton Francis Cowan, Jr., age 78, of Sturgis, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, July 29, 2025, at the home of his son, Jaime.

Born September 22, 1946 in Ypsilanti,Holton was the son of the late Holton F. and Dorothy (Middaugh) Cowan, Sr. He spent most of his life in the Sturgis area, where he built a legacy of craftsmanship, family, and service.

On October 6, 1968, Holton married Vicki J. Lego in Sturgis. They shared over 40 years of marriage before her passing in 2010. A talented carpenter, woodworker, and certified mechanic, Holton was known for his skills with his hands and his resourceful spirit.

He proudly served in the United States Army from July 1964 to July 1967, attaining the rank of SP/4. Holton was especially proud of his military service, which reflected his lifelong commitment to honor and duty.

Holton found joy in nature and adventure—fishing, camping, traveling, rock hounding, and mining for gems and gold. He cherished time spent along the shores of Lake Michigan. Those who knew him will remember his generosity, love of laughter, and his talent for pulling a good prank.

He is survived by his children: Martha (Steve) Schultz, Jaime (Tina) Cowan, and Brian Cowan; grandchildren: Sarah Purcell, Katherine Purcell, David Purcell, Jacob Cowan, Megan Tregunna, Joseph Cowan, Amanda Reyes, and Devan Lowler; great-grandchildren: Samuel Brackob, Izaak Purcell, Luke Harker, Nora Fry, Donovan Modert, Julian Farster, and David Purcell, Jr.

Holton is also survived by his siblings: Jacqueline Cowan, Vernon (Judy) Cowan, Sr., Frank Cowan, Brenda Lindo, Greg (Karen) Wilbur, Gordan Wilbur, Deborah (Jerry) Overstreet, Gerald Wilbur, and Harold Wilbur, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Holton and Dorothy; stepfather Gerald Wilbur; and siblings: Karalyn Wilbur, Nina Cowan Studabaker, Harry Wilbur, Sr., and David Wilbur.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service with full military honors will be held at 2:30 on Friday, August 8th at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, with honors presented by the Fort Custer Honor Guard and the United States Navy Honor Guard.
