St. Joseph County Road Commission Board Chairman Eric Shafer said more than 23 miles of new road surface was applied in the 2024 calendar year.
Presenting the agency’s annual report to St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners during their monthly meeting Tuesday, Shafer said the road commission’s primary road project last year was the reconstruction of North Angling and Butler roads in Nottawa Township. The project’s price tag was $1.4 million.
Providing an update on 2025 projects, Shafer said highlights include replacing the Prairie Corners Road bridge over the St. Joseph River in Mendon Township, construction of a round-about at Lutz Road and Centreville-Constantine Road in Florence Township, and more than 12 miles of hot-mix-asphalt overlay on portions of Millers Mill Road in Constantine Township, Bennett Road in Leonidas Township, and Chamberlain and Flowerfield roads in Flowerfield Township.
Shafer, who plans to step down from the road commission board when his term expires at the end of the year, said the agency has secured funding for the 2026 replacement of the Farrand Road bridge over the St. Joseph River in Colon Township.

A roundabout at Lutz Road is unneeded, unwanted and plain stupid. What a waste of much needed road and bridge taxpayer money. Show the accident records for that intersection. They prove accidents are almost non-existent there compared to other locations. Once again the County proves a former commision’s assertion that the best and brightest leave the county.
