County commission considers raise for elected officials

St. Joseph County officials are expected to approve a 3 percent salary increase for elected officials.

The matter was discussed during Tuesday’s executive committee meeting.

County administrator Teresa Cupp said 3 percent raises are being suggested for 2026 and another 3 percent in 2027 for St. Joseph County’s drain commissioner, treasurer, clerk/register of deeds, prosecuting attorney and sheriff.

With the expected increase – set for a vote at the county commission’s monthly meeting next Tuesday – annual salaries for 2026 will be $89,000 for drain commissioner Jeff Wenzel, $85,000 for treasurer Kathy Humphreys, $98,000 for clerk/register Gina Everson, $136,000 for prosecutor Deb Davis and $116,000 for sheriff Chad Spence.

County commission members are also in line to receive a 3 percent raise in 2026, pending a vote on the matter next week.

Each member of the seven-person board would receive an annual pay of $9,700, a $300 increase from their current annual paycheck.
