An Elkhart man was hospitalized after he disobeyed a stop sign and caused a multi-vehicle crash in Cass County’s Porter Township. A 40-year-old Sturgis man was arrested after he was found to be in possession of items taken during a breaking-and-entering incident last week in Burr Oak Township. Undersheriff Jason Bingaman said deputies responded Thursday to a residence in the 29000 block of Kelly Road. Federal tornado assistance denied

St. Joseph County officials were notified last week that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has determined the damage caused by the May 7 tornadoes in a four-county region does not warrant supplemental federal assistance. County unemployment increased in June

June’s unemployment rate in St. Joseph County increased by nearly a full percentage point from May. Figures from the monthly labor-market analysis by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget show St. Joseph County’s unemployment rate rose from 4.1 percent in May to 4.9 percent in June.
