Out and About – Week of May 3rd

Time does pass quickly. It has been a year already since the mail carriers have collected non-perishable food items for local food banks or pantries. Once again, next Saturday, May 8, the National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service, will collect non-perishable food items like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal, and rice to help families in need in our community. All you need to do to help is to place your food donation at your mailbox on May 8 before your letter carrier arrives with your mail for that day. The food will be taken to the post office and then delivered to local food banks or pantries. You are asked not to include items that have expired or any items in glass containers. Please don’t forget to thank your carrier for, once again, going above and beyond the call.

DAMN YANKEES opens Friday evening at the Three Rivers Community Players’ Theatre in Three Rivers. This show will run the next two weekends, May 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, and 16. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 P.M., and the two Sunday matinees are at 2. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $13 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at Beam Sound and Video on West Michigan in Three Rivers. You may call Rodney at (269)279-6251. Tickets will also be available at the door, but because of the popularity of this production, advance ticket purchase is advised. The Players’ Theatre is located on Millard Road, directly behind Dairy Queen.

Several weeks ago I mentioned the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26. One of the fundraisers, “Bark for Life”, is a canine event to fight cancer. This fundraiser takes place this Saturday, May 8, at Meyer Broadway Park, just west of Three Rivers at the intersection of Broadway Road and Roberts Road. Registration begins at 9:30 A.M. and the opening ceremonies start at 10. This will be followed by the walk around the track until noon. Registration is $10 for each dog, with a two-dog limit per owner. All dogs must be on a leash, and owners must be prepared to clean up after their four-legged friends. Prizes will be awarded, and there will be entertainment and vendors on site. For more information, please contact Sally Cotton at (269)279-3550. One of the many reasons for “Bark for Life” is that pets will not be permitted at the June Relay for Life at Armstrong Field in Three Rivers.

This is the season for garage and yard sales. If you’d like to find some terrific bargains and contribute to this year’s Relay for Life as well, make sure to attend the Community Yard Sale this Saturday, May 8, from 8 A.M. until 1 P.M. at JOCO Field on the corner of 9th Avenue and Washington in Three Rivers. If you need more information, please contact Kandi Hagenbuch at 278-1715.

The 26th Annual Michiana Antique Engine & Tractor Swap Meet happens this Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8. Once again, the venue is Boot Hill Ranch, located one and one-half miles east of Jones on Bair Lake Street. If you have an interest in machinery of any kind, or just enjoy taking in the sights or bargains at a swap meet, then you won’t want to miss this annual event. The admission is only a one- dollar donation. The swap meet is presented by Scotts Olde Tyme Power & Equipment Association, the St. Joe valley Old Engine Association, and Kalamazoo Valley Antique Engine & Machinery Club. If you need more information, please phone Brian Boerman at (269)646-0525, or Daisy Wagner at (269)435-7241.

Rounding out the many events of this coming weekend, we have Three Rivers Area Mentoring’s (TRAM) 5th Annual “Glow Bowl” Friday evening, May 7, from 6:45 until 8:45 at South Lanes, located on Broadway in Three Rivers. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students. You may also collect $20+ in collected pledges for your admission. Tickets or pledge sheets may be obtained at Lowry’s Book Store or through TRAM. For further details, phone 278-8726. Advance ticket purchase will reserve your spot. Mentors may include their mentees at no extra charge. All proceeds will benefit Three Rivers Area Mentoring.

Next Sunday is Mothers Day. Please remember that special person who gave you life.

Have a great week and I’ll see you Out and About!
