Hildegard Lewis, 60

Hildegard Lewis, age 60, of Sturgis, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

She was born Nov. 28, 1950, in Oggersheim, Germany, a daughter of the late Albert and Maria Metz.

Hildegard had resided in Sturgis for the past 40 years, coming from Germany. On March 26, 1970, she married John Lewis in Oggersheim.

She had been employed by Rehau Plastics in Sturgis for nine years and currently owned and operated, with her husband, Sturgis Hardware in Sturgis, and she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose Sturgis Chapter #613 and played in pool leagues. She enjoyed playing golf, going to casinos, traveling to Germany and loved time spent with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, John; one daughter, Angie (Todd) Gearhart of Montpelier, Ohio; three sons, Frank (Kim) Metz of Sturgis, David (Benita) Lewis of Centreville and Robert (Angela Vercler) Lewis of Sturgis; 11 grandchildren, Aerreal, Chelsea, Caitlyn and Michael Metz, Samantha, Sara, Bailey, Lauren and Jacob Lewis and Meghan and Jon Kulpinski; three sisters, Kuni (Willie) Reise and Renate Gundel and Maria (Roland) Unger, all of Germany; three brothers, Peter Metz, Eugen (Sabine) Metz and Klaus Metz, all of Germany; many nieces and nephews; and Shawn Lewis, who she loved like a daughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Karl Metz.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Hildegard Lewis will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. The Rev. Randy Evans of the New Beginnings Church of Sturgis will officiate.
