Land Sold In Leonidas Township

A 360-acre property in Leonidas Township has been purchased by an Indiana-based farmers consortium.

The $2.4 million purchase of the property along Longnecker Road effectively ends the prospect of a 2,300-head dairy farm previously proposed for the site. Perry Vieth, president of Ceres Partners of South Bend, said the company plans to use the land for seed corn and rotate in other crops every two to three years.

The property had been eyed for development of a dairy farm backed by Vreba-Hoff Development and managed by German immigrant Juergen Bustorf. The property, however, went up for auction in early December and was subsequently obtained by Ceres Partners.

Vieth said irrigation equipment will be used and seed corn will be grown during the 2012 season.
