Scholarship Funds For Education

Officials from the Mendon School Foundation announced this week that a retired Mendon Middle School teacher who passed away last summer left the foundation $1.7 million.

Math teacher Jan Hollenbeck, who spent 27 years with the district, left the money with the stipulation that it be used for scholarship funds to support Mendon High School graduates who go on to pursue a career in education.

Bonnie Outman, treasurer of the Mendon School Foundation, said the school’s class of 2012 will be the first to benefit from the Jan Hollenbeck Memorial Scholarship, as a recipient or recipients will be named in May.

Outman said the foundation has not yet determined the amount of the scholarship annually.

Hollenbeck, a lifelong bachelor, was 70 when he died of heart failure last July.
