Even though its the middle of summer when beach water is usually warm, officials this week are warning swimmers and boaters about the dangers of hypothermia. Brandon Hoving of the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, says Lake Michigan water temperatures this week are down into the 40s in some areas. He says the sustained cool air temperatures, and the cold front that came through Sunday, pushed the water temperatures down from the 60s into the 40s. Hoving says Lake Michigan has been colder than normal to begin with and it could take several days in a row of air temperatures in the 80s to bring the water temperature back into the 60s so “it may take some time yet to get back up to where (the water temperature this time of year) normally is.” (MRN)
