Horses dead following barn fire

17 horses died in a fire late Tuesday afternoon at a boarding facility southeast of Edwardsburg in Cass County. Fire departments from 15 communities were called to fight the blaze at Smithfield Stables, which is located just north of the state line on Elkhart Road.
