Kalamazoo Nature Center getting 22-acre land donation

The Kalamazoo Nature Center is getting a 22-acre land donation from philanthropist Jon Stryker along with support for a new educational facility.

The nature center said Monday the land along the West Fork of Portage Creek borders the grounds of Kalamazoo Nature Center’s Nature’s Way Preschool facility. The center opened a preschool at the site in 1982 and expanded into a new 6,000-square-foot preschool facility in 2013.

In addition to the land donation, Stryker has committed to a 2-to-1 matching grant of up to $700,000 that will go toward a proposed educational facility on the site along with other renovations and ongoing maintenance costs of the property.

Stryker has maintained a home on the property. As a condition of the donation, several conservation easements will be placed on the land.  (AP)
