It was rise and shine time for the Kalamazoo Wings (24-24-1-3) and the Cincinnati Cyclones (26-23-4-0) on Monday morning as the two teams faced-off for the K-Wings second and final Education Day game of the season. Game time was 10:30 am.
Coming off back to back weekend losses, the K-Wings looked to right the ship with a victory against the Cyclones. The K-Wings currently trail the Tulsa Oilers by three points in the playoff standings.
The K-Wings were dominant in the first period, firing off 19 shots while only allowing five from the Cyclones. However, neither team was able to get the puck past either goaltender and the score was tied at zero at the end of one.
While on the power play in the second period, Justin Taylor notched his 23rd of the season to give the K-Wings a 1-0 lead.
While only collecting three shots in the period, the Cyclones were able to score on one of them to tie the game at 1-1. Tommy Mele took advantage of a K-Wing turnover to score his seventh of the season.
Taking control in the third period, the Cyclones added a pair of goals in the first four minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Christian Minella and Jaynen Rissling scored for the Cyclones.
Attempting a comeback, the K-Wings cut the lead to 3-2 on another Taylor power play goal. The K-Wings almost completed the comeback, but an apparent goal was waved off by the referee.
K-Wings News and Notes: Kalamazoo went 2/3 on the power play and 2/2 on the penalty kill… The K-Wings outshot the Cyclones, 39-26… Kalamazoo has lost three straight games, all of which have been one-goal games…Kalamazoo’s three shots allowed during the second period are the least allowed in a single period all season.
The K-Wings travel to East Moline, Illinois for a Friday night game against the Quad City Mallards. The K-Wings return home for a pair of games to close out the weekend. On Saturday, the K-Wings host the Mallards on Mardi Gras night. Game time is 7 pm. The Cyclones return to town on Sunday for the 3 pm game.
