Patton trial adjourned

The murder trial for Zachary Patton, originally scheduled to begin next week in St. Joseph County 45th Circuit Court, was adjourned Tuesday.

Patton was scheduled to stand trial for the July 2017 murder of Shane Richardson.

The proceeding was delayed so a psychiatrist could evaluate additional medical records to see if Patten is competent to stand trial. No new trial date has been set.

According to authorities, Patten on July 20 last year drove to a home in the 16000 block of Featherstone Road in Florence Township, where his ex-wife resided.

Police said Patten shot Richardson at point-blank range and in view of two children.

In February, Patten was found guilty of first-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm by a Kalamazoo County jury for a crime he committed prior to the St. Joseph County incident.
