Area law enforcement join forces

The St. Joseph County Area Narcotics Unit and the Southwest Enforcement Team recently joined forces to form SWET-South.

The multi-jurisdiction unit replaces what was previously known as the St. Joseph County Area Narcotics unit.

The new unit includes officers from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police and Sturgis Police Department.

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite said the new group gives St. Joseph County more resources and sustainability. Other advantages to the collaborative effort, he said, include the opportunity to share information with other SWET units.

SWET-South is under the command of Michigan State Police D/Lt. James Lass. He also is over SWET-East, which includes Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties.

Day-to-day operations of SWET-South will be the responsibility of a St. Joseph County Sheriff detective-sergeant.

Thanks to all of them!! What a thankless job having to go out all hours of the day and night looking for these thugs that would rather deal or steal than get a job! Our officers I feel are devastatingly under paid for what they have to go up against! Again thanks and appreciation for all you do!
