After falling to the Cincinnati Cyclones by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday evening, the Kalamazoo Wings continued their four-game road trip as they headed to Independence, Missouri for a Saturday night match-up against the Kansas City Mavericks.
Brandon Anselmini got things going early in the first period for the K-Wings as he found a loose puck in front of the net and sent it past Mavericks goaltender Nick Schneider for a 1-0 lead. The goal by Anselmini was his third of the season.
Chris Collins scored his 21st goal of the year late in the period gave the K-Wings a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The K-Wings took a 3-0 lead just a minute and a half into the second period as Zach Saar was able to score on the power play. The goal, Saar’s 10th of the year, was assisted by Tanner Sorenson and Kyle Bushee.
Finding their groove late in the period, the Mavericks connected for two power play goals of their own just over a minute apart of each other, to cut the K-Wings lead to a single goal.
Sorenson took control in the third period, netting two goals, to give the K-Wings a 5-2 lead. Just 58 seconds into the third period, Sorenson completed a highlight reel-worthy goal as he scored the goal with this stick between his legs, sending the puck over the goaltender.
Sorenson’s second of the night came just five minutes later as he scored his 16th of the season.
Jake Hildebrand was in net for the K-Wings stopping 21 of the 23 shots he faced. The K-Wings went 1-for-3 on the power play.
Next up, the K-Wings will host the Toledo Walleye in a big Central Division match-up this Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. The K-Wings are in third place behind the Walleye. On Friday, the K-Wings will host the Fort Wayne Komets.
K-Wings News and Notes: Forward Kyle Thomas was recalled to the AHL Utica Comets on Thursday. In 41 games with the K-Wings, Thomas has scored 15 goals and added 23 assists.
